Some clients seem to think the manager is like a bookmaker - placing bets all day on different shares. Others think the manager buys some shares, waits for them to go up in value, and that is it. I am the first to admit that at times there is a bit of "smoke and mirrors" to it. But most of the time it comes back to the exciting stuff of reading company reports, and analysing the data. Managers look for the hidden value in things, and take a position in the stocks that meet their standards. This Video by Investors Mutual is fairly dry but unlike a day at the races, funds management is a fairly dry business.
If getting rich was easy then everyone would do it.
