Clients often ask us, just what does a manager of a managed fund do?. Some clients seem to think the manager is like a bookmaker - placing bets all day on different shares. Others think the manager buys some shares, waits for them to go up in value, and that is it. I am the first to admit that at times there is a bit of "smoke and mirrors" to it. But most of the time it comes back to the exciting stuff of reading company reports, and analysing the data. Managers look for the hidden value in things, and take a position in the stocks that meet their standards. This Video by Investors Mutual is fairly dry but unlike a day at the races, funds management is a fairly dry business.

If getting rich was easy then everyone would do it.

We're no longer as tied to the US and our marriage to Asia is stronger. The IMF released research last week that confirmed the strength of our “new” marriage with Asia. It concluded that a shock to Asian economies over the last 10 years has dramatically overtaken the US as the most important external factor influencing our business cycle. It estimated that the impact of a 1% economic shock in Asia would produce a 1/3 percent change in Australia’s growth rate. Whereas a shock isolated to our old flame, the US, is now estimated to have negligible impact here.

It should be noted that the IMF research focussed on the effects on GDP rather than share market moves. So, it's likely we'll still be heavily influenced by the US lead in terms of day to day stock market movements.
